Summer has never passed by this fast

Okay Mia, an update for you. Matagal ka na yatang naghihintay. :D

Gone are the days when summer vacation meant blissfully whiling away hours in front of a computer/tv in an airconditioned room, eating junk food loaded with cancer-inducing preservatives all day, and basically transforming into a couch potato with atrophied muscles and neurons. The beautiful weeks wherein all the (academic) worries would be lifted clean off your shoulders, and all you'd have to worry about is how to prevent boredom by doing things you actually like to do.

Oh those carefree days...!

(nostalgia trip)

Taking summer classes in Ateneo is another reminder of our transition from the worry-free world of kids and into the frightening, responsibility-ridden world of adulthood where "vacations" are few and far in between. Summer classes eating into your precious and long-awaited fun time, loading your figurative shoulders with workload intended to be spread out throughout a full-length sem and thus made more intense. What was originally a time for rest and relaxation is now a hell of heat, calculus, and extremely loooooong filipino reading materials (yes, my three worst enemies).

Oh joy!

But I guess the advantage of this setup is the continuous workout it provides your brain. Because we're forced to study everyday due to the teacher's crammed-in lesson plans, my brain will never have the chance to blissfully erase from my consciousness everything related to dreary academics. The mental faculties won't atrophy and rot due to overexposure to tv (although I still watch Simpsons and Justice League though!). Also, I won't spend as much as I used to, since I wouldn't have time to go shopping.

Most important, however, is the fact that summer classes distract me from boredom. Because we always have something to do, time passes by twice as fact. In fact, sometimes I forget that it's summer and I think that I'm in the middle of a sem. The connotation of "summer" as work- and problem-free is simply gone from my head. Now, summer is nothing more than a season.

It seems only a short time ago that we went in our customary family vacation in Ilocos. There, we lived out the real spirit of summer vacation just like you see it on tv: white powdery beaches, blue glittering seas, cold drinks, parties... But that time was short-lived. For me, "summer" ended on the first day of class.

That's why I couldn't help laughing as I saw the "back-to-school" ads that are usually posted around Megamall at this time. I thought, "lucky bastar...i mean, kids, I already AM in school!".
